ANDRIES VEERMAN - Artist Statement Peace, Power and Solitude are the three elements that inspire me in a landscape... Throughout my years of painting the thing I have learnt the most from my mentors is; "it's not learning how to paint, it's learning how to see". I feel I'm a lot more vigilant these days, persistently studying how the ambiance transforms, analyzing what I'm seeing and recollecting how I can integrate that into my approach. It is important for an artist to live a balanced life; one is getting out of the studio and seeing... I love to get out and mountain bike at least three times a week, riding out the sunsets and study the twilight colors - that has truly helped my sentiments. As a young artist everything had to be so structured and planned, it got to be pretty predictable after a while. These days I start with some basis from a reference or a drawing and as the painting progresses I then allow my emotions to evolve the painting and take it to a more poetic level. |
