GINA STEPANIUK - Artist Statement

Terra Incognita

There are places in my paintings that directly reference landscape.   The work comes from years of exploring the genre and my love of "everything Nature" - Physical and Spiritual.   The driving force behind my work is the painting process itself - doing, undoing, and doing again - a system of trial and error as a metaphor for the very elements of nature I try to capture.  

For the last several years my gaze has turned to looking at the landscape from the perspective of space and on a microscopic level --- both occurring simultaneously.   I consider multiple elements of nature - life and death, beauty and the sublime coinciding in and out of balance within an ever-troubled environment.   Deconstructing what is familiar and known in order to create a more holistic observation of the earth within the context of equanimity.   From a far distance and extremely up-close everything is fundamentally the same.
