DAN HUDSON - Artist Statement

Spending time outside has always been an important part of my life.   The endless fascination with exploring creeks and woods as I was growing up has developed into a passion for various types of outdoor adventures in my adult years. Keeping one foot planted in the natural world acts as a counterbalance to the web of technology and comforts I find myself surrounded in day to day.

This art project is a direct result of my sojourns outside. The individual compositions are produced from photographs of the landmarks that intrigued me over the entire course of a specific journey.   They are about moving through the landscape, rather then a snapshot of the view.

These works consist of four segments representing the four elements (earth, air, fire & water). It is the four elements that physically shape the surface of this planet, forming the distinctive landscape features of each region. The interaction with the four elements also has a dramatic influence in flavouring our experience when we are out in the natural environment. For example, strong wind, cold rain, or bright sun will completely change the way we perceive the same landscape.

Although any journey can be repeated, the intricate combination of things that produce the experience can never be duplicated. Our world is simultaneously tangible and transient. I feel that this principal is the most valuable commodity that I am able to transfer from my wilderness adventures back to my daily routine. I perceive these art works as landscapes as well as a testament to the uniqueness of each passing moment.
