DIANE COLWELL - Artist Statement My process for these works is to work on site with a Polaroid camera, responding immediately and directly to my intentions and the subject. I begin with scratching and drawing into the surface with a sharp point (I've used a nail file, stick, pencil, knife) just as the image starts to emerge, creating a minimal linear element. As the intense, saturated colors start to brighten up, I then go into the Polaroid with pastels, responding in a more painterly and gesture manner, sometimes abstracting the image. I'm very aware of trying to keep a balance between the photograph and the alteration, so that the image is working as a balanced whole, where each medium has an integrity. I then rephotograph these small intimate images with a large format camera to obtain a large negative. I then print a larger size photograph (up to 30" X 30") and enjoy the illusion of paint texture that is evident in these type c photographs. Throughout my artist career, I've been working with the idea of degeneration, alteration and manipulation of the photographic image striving to make evident the artist's touch. My intention is to deal with ideas of time, memory and viewer's engagement of the piece though a series of images, video works and installations. I see it as a search for a
