JOHN CAPITANO

Interested in his everyday surroundings the paintings of John Capitano capture a moment of beauty in environments abundant with visual activity. Reflections and merchandise seen simultaneously in a dollar store window, the chaos of domesticity as seen in a kitchen sink of a profusion of graffiti tag found on an inner city building are all arresting visions of beauty worthy of a prolonged observation.

Capitano through high realism depicts a macro perspective of flowers found in his Vancouver garden. The wealth of information captured from meticulously painting thousands of petals and leaves speak to the culmination of so much natural activity to offer a moment of glory. Cherry Blossoms, poppies and hydrangeas are intimately depicted in an explosion of colour, depth and light.

In 1987, John Capitano received his BFA from the University of Western Ontario and went on to complete his MFA in 1991 from the University of Calgary. Ha has won several awards including the coveted Liquitex Excellence in Art Purchase Award in 1999. Capitano has exhibited in Canada, and London, England. He continues to live and work in Vancouver, B.C., Canada
